Re: DEFIANCE ROAD ARC DISCUSSION THREAD - DEFtv #63 IS LIVE!
Sound the Alarm
This is how to handle an authority figure. The heel boss is played out, the babyface boss is boring. Give me a Kelly Evans any day of the week who has one interest - the continued prosperity of the company. If I'm ever in a position to work a program with Eugene Dewey, however, I may need to refer to him as Princess Peach every time.
Welcome to the Show
As always, a good breakdown of the show and the things that are happening, complete with snide comments from Angus. He's totally the star of the show.
The Green Midget vs. Walter Levy
I loved the transitions in this match - how the normal 'rules' for wrestling get tossed out when your opponent is only 4 foot 7. Props to Levy for working around them. Little disappointed at the finish; a somewhat inept interference from JACK HUNTER might push a story forward but I was actually a little pissed that we were robbed of a finish. Success, right?
Collecting Receipts
Love the need to stay professional with co-workers you hate, but as always happens, it devolves into shit throwing. The edge was taken off by DDK and Angus discussing DEFspy at the end, which makes the edge that much more effective. At the same time, I think there might have been a little too much exposition for a private conversation.
Omega vs. Van Carver
Certainly brutal. I think this got Omega over as a beast, got Carver over as as never - say - die gutsy motherfucker, but at the same time I was reading it and found myself losing interest a few times: the words used sounded like a transcript read after the fact where we knew the finish and knew that neither athlete was in any real danger. I hope that makes sense - the intercut commentary did not sound like there was any sense of urgency to it.
Plotting & Scheming
Great babyface moment. The Murrray brothers rule. My only real comment is the commentators at the beginning of the piece. Backstage vignettes that are accepted as being 'on camera' are usually done like a 'slice of life' where we all agree that the participants don't know the camera is there. Angus and Keebler's commentary during the scene tells us that there is a camera there, which means the Murrr's should've acknowledged it. You can lift Angus and DDK out without changing anything about the rest of the segment and I think it would work just as well.
Sam Horry vs. FDJ
I think what I like best about JACK HUNTER (interesting way to start this match review) is that he's a ridiculous character who has to interact with a real world situation. Nobody just accepts him as being the way he is. "Sam manages to mouth the words, "the...fuck?" was the only thing to say. Beyond JACK HUNTER, it was a quick one, but it gets over the power of Sam's kick like nothing else. A little uneven with the JACK HUNTER cameo, but enjoyable.
JACK HUNTER tries to DDT a flight case
I love how he refers to Trebol as a cactus. It fits, but it's so ridiculous it's awesome.
AD: Clash of the Defiants
Glorious promo piece.
PCP vs. Barrio Boys
I like the idea and existence of BRAZEN - it's a good storytelling tool. Speaking of tools, the Pop Culture Phenoms... I kid. But these two teams are total opposites, which I love. The D, dedicating the match to Mikey Unlikely was a great cheap heat comment - and that's a good thing. Highly entertaining sports entertainment wrestling match, I think we should see this one again and again.
It's not you, it's me
It's always sad when a divorce happens. Will they have joint custody of THEIRBOYTAI? It might not be exciting but it's far more realistic that a team that doesn't get along just splits instead of doing the "I'll stab you in the back during our match" route. Besides Dan Ryan has the FIST - what's one title belt or another? I really just wish I was further indulged, instead of Ryan making a comment about a barber shop window, if he asked LT if he should put her in a bamboo cage and blow it up, instead. You know what I'm talking about.
Dusty Griffith vs. Johnny Booya
Love Angus calling Dusty 'Mayberry' throughout. It's the little things that sell the story. Beyond that, this one felt less like a wrestling match and more like a straight up brawl. Add the interference and Dusty getting the win against all odds, my pick for match of the night.
Defying the Standards of Greatiness
Intro for Rocko and Kuroyama. Would love to do a little program between Impulse and Rocko - they're very similar but never really got to match up in EPW. Big fan of both these guys.
Cayle Murray vs. Jake Donovan
Heh. Calamurray. That's gonna stick. Speaking of sticks, Eric Dane is pretty much just poking him with one now. Jake Donovan gets a win and another step closer to a shot at Harmony's SOHER championship, but that's amost an afterthought between the continued war, the Murrray boys on one side and DeanDane on the other. But that gets swept up even more when you feel it coming
In The Air
tonight. That's a teaser, and shit just got even more real than real.
The Defiant Road
Awesome.
Impulse vs. Curtis Penn
As this was an intro match, and, in storyline, a 'tryout' match, I tried to include a little bit of everything. Might've been a bit crowded, but I think it contained a good mix of wrestling and sports entertainment. Curtis Penn is a great shitheel to play spoiler for Impulse, and going up against a man as hated as Penn will get Pulse started off on the right foot. Not sure where the confusion came in - Pulse is clearly a ring veteran, but Curtis Penn doesn't respect him enough to know that, so if he's new to Defiance he's new to him. Going to enjoy tormenting Angus with Cally for the forseeable future.
Role Reversal
Glorious. Love seeing Mikey get the other end of it for once. Andy Sharp is going to feel the Bruvs before long, though.
Trios match
Everything's better with vikings. Brutally brutal with interference and fighting from underneath - Lindz and Ty were pretty high up there now but I'd put them at the top of the babyface food chain after that one, and while Eugene Dewey is in line for a FIST rematch, I'm pretty sure Lindz is coming for Dan Ryan.
Victory
Post - debut, we get the intro to the Viking War Cult, and we get a good idea of what they're going to do. Like I said - everything is better with vikings.
Invitation
Not sure I like the opening - Angus is too forgiving of Ryan leaving HISBOYTAI high and dry. He might be 'understanding' about leaving Lindz behind, but if you wrong Ty, Angus should neither forgive nor forget. Loved the continuity - this was set up at the end of the previous Ryan segment, called back to the Curtis Penn mic spot where he insulted Impulse by calling him a rookie. Also a great callback to Curtis Penn demanding a shot at Ryan at 64, only to see his opponent get it.
Harmony vs. Andy Sharp
Echoing the others - short match, sudden finish, but the quick pace and extracurriculars made it worth it. Can't wait to see Harmony get some revenge on Mikey.
Aces on this one, we're rolling now. And I feel like everyone's pretty much intergrated themselves really fucking quickly - faster than I thought and that was pretty fast.
