Question 1 - Does anyone know where I can learn PHP?

Reason? To put it one way, my server looks like a trash can with the numerous .dat and .txt files required for my numerous CGI script. I've also hit a problem with my log-in section, where there is no authentication checker. I know to do this I'll need cookies, and I'm not too good with them in CGI.

This leads to my second question. Does anyone know how to write a log-in and authentication checker in PHP or CGI? Every single one I've created has been hackable with HTML, which is a joke.

PHP.net is the official PHP site and has a tutorial/walkthrough on there. I'd highly recommend it. Furthermore, there's the PHP Tutorial found at the W3 schools (a great place to learn new languages) at: www.w3schools.com/php/default.asp.

I've never done PHP user-authentication, but a couple sites I found are:

http://www.zend.com/zend/tut/authentication.php
http://www.informit.com/articles/article.asp?p=31690
http://www.sitepoint.com/article/http-authentication-php

I wish you the best of luck... I'm a big fan of PHP myself, and have found it to be much easier and more powerful than Perl.

Yeah, it definatly seems to be the easier option. Perl/CGI takes up way too much server space through both the scripts (the amount of coding needed to do what I wanted was rediculous) and files stored.

For some reason, I've never actually attempted to learn PHP. I suppose it was down to one of many server problems I had, or more importantly the lack of support I recieved. For example, when I asked a while back if it would be possible for them to remove all subdomains on my account, they replied "It would be...".

Honestly, some people...

Question... you can learn it just by reading it right? Or would it be smarter to test it and such? Because to test it, you need free space on a server that supports PHP, so that'd mean I'd need some first before I could learn. This sound right, or am I going to far into this?

If you're running Windows XP or 2000/2003, you can configure IIS to run as a local web server, and install PHP on that server to test it out on your own system.
