Fadein: Tom Adler sits in a darkened room illuminated only by a video monitor that flickers with footage of matches from the past season. An ominous red glow comes from the corner... the tell-tale sign of a camera looking over the situation
I suppose this is the point in time when I'm supposed to give the sheet writers some witty one liner that they can plagurize as something original for the geeks that actually read those things to oogle over. But then, I've never actually been one to play by somebody else's rules. So, I guess I'll pass and cut right to it.
Eli Flair, you and I have never really seen eye to eye on much of anything in our careers, despite the fact that, as you so name droppingly pointed out, we've only ever met once before in the ring. But, you're right when you said that in the overall scheme of things, this match is fairly meaningless.
I had a choice to make upon coming to this company. Whether I cared more about Eddie Mayfield or my own personal ambitions. Unfortunately for both Eddie and Craig Miles, I'm the type of guy who likes to have his cake and eat it too. Mayfield and I have been in the same ring together three times since I came here. I left him laying in a pool of blood two of those times. The other? I did what I've become infamous for on a number of other occasions... I destroyed the legacy of the UWA.
And that pretty much brings us full circle to now. A tag match between four combatants to determine the top four seeds of the Ultra-Title tournament. I could point out that I've already beaten one of my oponents in this match. I suppose I just did. But, Alias, I realize that was seemingly ages ago and there will always be those who say the match could have gone the other way. I'd probably agree with at least part of that.
Alamassy? You managed to finish first in the rankings. The fact that you still need to compete to be the top seed, I suppose, is Miles' way of saying that you backed your way into that ranking, you didn't get there by your own doing. Whatever. All I'll say to you, at the moment, anyway, is the same as I'll say to both Eli and Alias. I was in your position. I was all alone at the top of the rankings. If I'd cared about where I was going to be seeded, I'd still be there. Period. I am where I am in this tournament because I put myself there. Not you. Not Alias. Not you, Eli. And certainly not Miles.
When this match is over? Well, you can all rest assured that I'll STILL be exactly where I want to be. I will simply leave one of you with this thought. And that is Eli Flair. Five years is a long time, Eli. I'm not the same hunk of rust you chose to pad your stats with. But, if you think back, following that match with you, I had a choice to make. I had to decide whether there was a place for me in this industry or not. I decided there was. And, I told you then, that there would come a point in time when you and I would cross paths again. And then, and only then, will you be able to come out here and HONESTLY say whether or not you'd gotten the best of whatever Tom Adler had left that night. No matter what happens in this match, that point IS coming, Eli. Because we both have the same objective. And, to achieve it, ONE of us is going to need to lose at some point.
I'm sure you believe in your heart of hearts that that ONE is going to be me, so I'll save you the predictible response response of saying it's not. I'll simply say this. Our battle WILL be waged. But, it won't be here.
