An Evening on the Idolatry Pad

(The camera fades into a well-lit interior sitting, congested with a dozen or so casually dressed people. It’s a party in a well-furnished apartment. Many guests, holding drinks, gather in pairs or groups to talk amongst themselves. But whose apartment is this? Why have these people gathered here? We soon find the answers. Terry Anderson steps into the frame, sporting one of his usual tan camel suits and tie. He welcomes the camera with a hosts smile, revealing a mouthful of perfect white teeth. Even at his age, many would find him handsome.)

Anderson: Well well well… Welcome, to my abode, the Idolatry Pad! HA HA!!

(Terry spends a moment cracking up, then readjusts himself. Maybe he’s had a little too much to drink.)

Anderson: Anywho… I won’t waste your time with any pointless chitchat on my part. I know who you’re here to see… and I’ll lead you to him.

(He turns and motions to follow. The camera begins to follow him, weaving through various people. He turns back occasionally, addressing the camera as he explains what’s going down.)

Anderson: As you can see, I’ve been throwing this party. For what, you ask? Well, for me! And all my hard work, whipping a virtually unknown kid from a backwater town in Indiana into GXW’s current high card… their Television Champion, future World Champion, future professional wrestling legend! We’re having what you could call a victory celebration, for a job well done… moving into one Pay Per View with a belt around the kid’s waist, and moving on with the job of kicking the ass of every naysayer on the roster only half-finished.

(He grabs the hind quarters of one lady who lets out a yelp of surprise, then sees the lecherous grin of the hand’s owner. She reflects the smile, and Terry goes on. He comes to the glass door to the balcony, propped open to reveal the fading daylight of Las Vegas, the streets beginning to fill with neon. A few people have congregated to this part of Terry’s apartment. Against the rail, talking to themselves and looking out over the vast scenery, is Stephen Waltz and a young lady who could be taken as his girlfriend.)

Anderson: Yo, kid! You’ve got a visitor.

(Stephen turns, sees the camera, and smiles. He looks pretty sharp today, his black hair tied back into a ponytail, and sporting a black dress shirt with matching jacket and chinos. No tie, leaving the top two buttons of his shirt undone.)

Waltz: Oh, hey… great to see you all.

(He puts an arm around his acquaintance, looks at her with a smile for a moment, then looks back to the camera.)

Waltz: I just got to say before anything else… if anybody’s watching Survivor this season, you might be familiar with Rupert… or Blackbeard Boneham as people from Kokomo would refer him to. Man, it’s great to see people who grew up in the same city we came from. Go Rupert, man! You are the Survivor!

(Waltz gives the camera a thumbs-up. Anderson, finding this quite ridiculous, comes into a laugh.)

Anderson: Great professional wrestler… but ain’t much going on up here, you know what I’m saying?

(Anderson steps over and playfully knocks his student on the head, imitating a hollow sound. Smiling, Waltz bats his mentor’s hand away.)

Anderson: So…

Waltz: Oh.

(He turns to the girl at his side.)

Waltz: Okay if I have a couple minutes?

(She smiles, and nods. Terry reaches out for her.)

Anderson: Come on, honey, I’ll introduce you to some friends of mine.

(Waltz’s girlfriend takes his hand and is led off camera, waving goodbye to Stephen. He returns the gesture, then the camera zooms in to put him in the center of the frame. He turns his attention to the matter at hand.)

“Living the high life… it makes me feel guilty. Should I really be all the way up here, living it up when the most important match of my career is just on the horizon? But then I remind myself… for many months, Terry and I have worked relentlessly to make me into what I am. As a result, I am the undefeated Television Champion of GXW. I’m still a rookie in mind and in heart… but still learning, and adapting. I’ve come so far… and I intend to continue by an exponential degree.”

(He turns out to look over the neon city of Las Vegas again.)

“In spite of everything… how far I’ve come and how much everything’s changed, everything is still the same for me. I am still Stephen Waltz, the bright, energetic kid out of Kokomo with a chip on his shoulder and the talent and credentials to back up his word. Some people would allow themselves to be taken in by all of this…”

(He turns back to the camera, his eyes serious for a moment.)

“But not me.”

“This weekend… when I go to Detroit and arrive at Ford Field, I’ll be bringing with me the same motivation and experience that’s gotten me this far. Because though things have suddenly gone from working hard to sitting back and kicking up my feet, I won’t for a second allow myself to let my guard down…”

“Not in GXW… not at Global Warfare… and definitely not against an opponent I’m fighting for the second time.”

(He nods, turning away for a moment to remember his past experience with the person he’s talking about.)

“The last time I met Adam Benjamin in the ring… I came out doing exactly what I told him to do. And he showed me what he calls his ‘A-Game’. In the end, the 111% I put into the match came out over his years of training and experience with the ‘esteemed’ British professional wrestling. This is a history lesson I don’t think I need to repeat… we both fought a great match, and though he put up a mighty effort, I was the one who had what was needed to win.”

“But if Adam Benjamin has any brain in his head—and I assure you he does—then he would learn from our last match. In these days leading up to Global Warfare, he will likely come out and address the American people in a negative way, and me very much the same way. But if he says anything, I hope to God it’s nothing like what he said the last time we were scheduled to butt heads…”

“All this talk about how the British are superior… about how that makes him superior… about how all that matters is the belt that hangs around your waist, and not the way you earn or defend it. I hope after our last encounter, Adam Benjamin understands professional wrestling in a more enlightened perspective… one that is shared by me and my esteemed trainer, the veteran Terry ‘The Idol’ Anderson, who has passed much of his wrestling philosophy onto me.”

“If Benjamin wanted any HOPE of coming back from defeat, he would take what I said to him and learn from the experience. He would use that against me at Global Warfare, and show me that our first match wasn’t what really mattered. It’s all about this match, for the Television Title… at Global Warfare.”

(He quietly shakes his head, turning back to the camera.)

“For the first time since I’ve picked up the Television Title, I’ve actually had my inhibitions about this match. This is the first time I’ve walked into a Pay Per View event with a belt slung over my shoulder… and it’s the first time I’ve gone head to head with a returning opponent. Yes, it’s true that for the many months I’ve been here in GXW, I’ve been given a new face to fight at every turn. Sure, it was good to quickly adapt to all different styles and personalities… but for once, I’m going head to head with a man who has fought and lost to me. He’s going to know how I work in the ring, as well as my weaknesses. He’ll do anything he can to exploit my flaws, and try to mount a victory.”

“Granted I as well know how he’ll fight… but does that matter? It’s Adam Benjamin who is coming back to prove something. It’s Adam Benjamin who will be determined to win. I’m afraid that he may sweep the rug out from under me without my even having been clued in. I’m going to admit flat out… he has the edge, not simply from experience. Though I won our match on Onslaught months ago, I know the seriousness of this match. I also know it’s not impossible for people who have lost to make a comeback…”

“It’s entirely natural in the wrestling world…”

(He falls silent for a few moments, closing his eyes and looking away. He’s deep in thought… truly disturbed and uncertain about how he will fair in this match. Then he looks back into the camera with the usual Stephen Waltz determination.)

“However… I’m only going to use this to push me further. I told Adam Benjamin that I would give everything and more the last time we met in the ring. Just because I beat him the first time doesn’t mean I’m going to stop with the initial plan. I will still give my 111%, relentless and unforgiving, until I have come out victorious.”

“And where Adam Benjamin has the emotional drive that gives him the advantage, I have the drive to uphold my reputation, as well as my career record. I don’t want to lose the Television Title… not just yet. And I’ll do anything I can to keep it in my grasp. Where Benjamin has something to prove to me, I have something to prove to the entire world… and I won’t stray away from the path that leads me to that goal, not for anything.”

“So Benjamin can come with his personal vendettas… but I’m already beyond the point of building a feud. I am GXW’s Television Champion, and with every Onslaught, Revolution, Xperience, and Pay Per View that passes with the belt around my waist, that legacy grows. I won’t stop… not for a moment’s rest.”

“I’m going to fulfill my destined path, and anybody standing in my way, Adam Benjamin or whoever else, will be walked over like stepping stones in a creek. This match can only end with me winning… moving up to the next rung of the ladder, until I finally come to the top.”

“So at Global Warfare… prepare for a match like you’ve never seen. Two men going toe to toe, neither of which willing to accept defeat. This will be the most challenging match of my career, but I will step in and fight with everything I have, nevertheless. Prepare yourselves, GXW… because at Global Warfare, Stephen Waltz versus Adam Benjamin for the Television Title, you will see the purest example of a great battle between two determined competitors…”

“If I were you, I wouldn’t miss it… and the same goes for the GXW talents. You could learn a lot from watching this match… just as much as I would.”

(With a final, separating nod, Stephen Waltz turns from the rail on Terry’s balcony and steps back into the congested apartment, where the party continues. We fade to black.)
