Fade in to Ace Mason sitting in front of a TEAM backdrop. He’s wearing a white Affliction shirt and khaki shorts, with Tungsten Oakley Fuente Antix sunglasses perched atop his head. He looks at the camera with a smirk on his face.
Ace Mason: “It’s certainly been a minute or two since I’ve been in front of one of these things. I’m not camera-shy, the opportunity just doesn’t arise nearly as often these days.
“Yet I’m here to make my inaugural return to TEAM. This will be my third Invitational Tournament. If this tournament is anything like the NBA playoffs and the zig-zag style betting odds, chances are I’ll do okay this year.
“Two years ago I made it to the Elite Eight before being knocked off by Jason Payne. I know first-hand how well guys can do their first year in this thing. That will be one of the main things on my mind next week when I go toe-to-toe with Brock Alyas. I was told it’s his first TEAM match from a reliable source. TiT ‘07’s first round was mine too.
“Last year Lindsay Troy knocked me out in the second round. It was eerily reminiscent to this promo period actually. I dropped a promo a few hours before the deadline and she dropped hers shortly afterward. Generally I find I do better when I have at least one chance to state my rebuttal to an opponents’ previously performed promo. But I had all week to put the pressure on Mr. Alyas.
“Let’s just hope he doesn’t come out here ranting about how he’s going to leave it all in the ring because he wants this tournament so bad and blah… blah… blah…
“The fact is, neither one of us has shown any effort yet. If it takes this long to give a sh*t, you’re probably full of it when confessing your undying ambitions. Granted, there’s still time. One of us has to make it to the next round. The winner gets a clean slate.
“Brock, I’ll be honest. Your name sort of rang a bell when I heard who my first round opponent is, but barely. It was sort of an ‘I’m slamming my wife and she’s screaming like a banshee, but I think I just heard the doorbell’ kind of ring. I did a little research and see you’ve been in NFW for over a year. You haven’t done much there, but maybe a nice run in the TiT will get you a little more face time.
“I caught a few of your promos. You’re brash, abrasive, long-winded and a little more polished than your typical convict from the mean streets of Motown. You’re more than willing to take a beating and even used to relish the opportunity.
“Everybody has their reasons for getting into this game, and more often than not, it shapes their success. Some get into it for the glory, and they either do well or they don’t based on their commitment and talent. Some do it because they have no other choice. You do it for the adrenaline that comes when the crowd is cheering your name. It’s approval seeking- a basic desire we all have to varying degrees of wanting to feel important.
“Ultimately this is the reason you’ve achieved mediocre success in your career. You rise and fall based on the whims of the crowd. It’s an empty venture, giving you little reason to succeed. Maybe it’s why you haven’t shown up all week. The motivation isn’t your own, your career isn’t your own creation. It’s merely a byproduct of your search for endorsement.
“It’ll never give you the meaning you’re looking for.”
Fade out as Ace Mason has an earnest yet understanding look in his eye. He seems to pity his opponent this round.
