Writing Sample

Jermaine hasn’t enjoyed his job since day one. When he applied for the “personal assistant” position he figured that he was applying for a part-time job to help pay the bills while he finished College. Instead, his boss demanded more hours than there were in the day and never once commended his work. “Personal assistant my ass,” Jermaine though, “I’m basically his bitch”.

Get his coffee. Pay his cell phone bill. Get his suit dry cleaned.

Jermaine only knew that his boss was a “Talent Advisor”. He didn’t know what for – but he assumed that his boss wasn’t overly successful lately. No talent was coming through the office doors on the tenth floor on Spring Street in downtown Columbus, Ohio. It wasn’t until the text message he received three days ago that he even knew what talent his boss managed, or advised, or whatever the fuck he does.

Get me all the information on this man as soon as possible.

That is what the text said. An angry ex-con based out of Miami, Florida with a Samoan background and has been making cash under the table by fighting in parking garages. A flight to Miami, a terrifying meeting, a contract presented and torn in half, another contract printed and torn in half, a third contract printed and signed reluctantly and a full background check later and Jermaine was about to present his boss with a new professional wrestler.

Jermaine thought professional wrestling died when the Hulkster turned porn-actor. “It doesn’t matter,” Jermaine thought, “only 2 more weeks and this job is over”.

He stood at his boss’ door an adjusted his tie. For some reason, his boss would wear jeans and a t-shirt but demand the highest standard of clothing from his personal assistant. Jermaine wasn’t even sure his boss owned a tie but he seemed to really get angry when Jermaine’s tie wasn’t done properly. He looked through the file again. Whatever his boss plans with this Aperamo Saifo, he did not think it was going to work. After watching him fight in the basement of a parking garage and leave his opponent a bloodied mess, lying face down on the cement – Jermaine knew there was something not right about this guy.

**knock, knock**

“Come in, come in”

“Mr. Myles, I have the paperwork for you”

“Ahh… young Jermaine, this is the greatest news I have had since hearing my ex-wife died!”

Jermaine hsn’t seen Terrance Myles so happy before. It was awkward.

“Alright, what are you waiting for? Hand it over boy.”

Jermaine hated being called “boy”, not just because he was 22 years old but because he was black and he was convinced that Terrance was racist. He handed it over and stood silently as he watched a smile come across Terrance’s face, it was the most sinister, sickening smile that he has ever seen.

“Jermaine, quickly get me Eric Dane on the phone, immediately”

Terrance watched Jermaine scatter out of his office like a bat out of hell. He thoroughly enjoyed watching the young man leap at his commands. He thought about possibly extending his contract for a while longer, but now that it looks like he will be back on the road again – he has no use for an assistant who can’t travel. He would offer Jermaine to travel with him but Terrance figured that Jermaine would chose school. “Pfff… school, what a waste of time,” Terrance said out loud.

He looked back at the folder and couldn’t help but feel a tingle of excitement again. He hasn’t had a client in so long and he missed the adrenaline that comes with standing in the ring and being hated by thousands staring at you. He wasn’t afraid of Aperamo’s temper – he knew how to manipulate monsters to do whatever he wanted. Terrance was a master manipulator. He could sell ice to an eskimo if he had to. That’s if he ever felt like torturing himself by talking to some northern brown-skinned eskimo. Saifo’s race wasn’t ideal, but with the latest surge of Samoan beasts thriving in the professional wrestling and fighting world – Terrance could look past that hindrance.

Terrance smiled again. He had the most dangerous man that Defiance Wrestling has ever seen in their squared circle. He had the man who would bring Terrance back to the place of glory that he always knew he should be at. Talent advisor of the hottest, most dangerous athletes to ever step foot in Defiance’s ring. He wasn’t just thinking world championships, he was thinking of how this could potentially change the entire industry.

People would look at Terrance and fear whatever creation he would think of next.

And it all starts with Aperamo Saifo.

Solid writing sample. I love that you prepared one especially for the application: that shows you want to be here, so kudos.

Character is solid. I've also enjoyed the strong, silent type with the loudmouth manager. There are a few similarities to our current monster heel Mushigihara, but your guy is a little rougher, a little less refined, and his manager feels like more of a straight-up wanker than Eddie Dante (Mushi's handler).

I am inclined to vote yes. First, though, could you tell me a little more about Aperamo's personality? Why does he fight? What are his motivations?

I like the writing sample, and I think the wrestler could be interesting. However, with the way it's presented, the wrestler seems like he could be any kind of silent athlete, with the mouthpiece being the gimmick.

Leaning yes, but I'd like to know more about the wrestler as well.E

EDIT: Also, references to real wrestlers (Hulkster) are widely frowned on in DEF, so please keep that in mind.

Thanks for the feedback thus far.
I apologize for the "real world" mention; I figured Hogan transcends reality and fiction. Don't worry it won't happen again.

Saifo (who will be what he is known as on camera) motivation is a bit undecided. I think it will evolve over time. I should have included a glimpse of his character. I'm leaning towards a hard upbringing, dealt a bad hand and used crime and aggression to make his way. As his story evolves he will have a soft spot that will show what broke the man from being a well intentioned teenager to the hard case he is now.

Terrance is a jerk. Assinine. Hated. Loud mouth. He will irk you as you read what he says and thinks. He is a bottom feeder personality with money. He will manipulate Saifo to his own personal gain.
Terrance will be a thrill on the microphone, he will tear his opponents to threads with verbal barrage with no limits.

Hope this helps.

There's nothing wrong with introducing him as a bit of a blank slate / a rough idea of an upbringing. You seem to be coming at it from a really smart angle, leaving the straight up chickenshit heelishness to the manager.

Good followup to the guys question. Yes vote from me.

You miiiiight have to change your finisher. I've used the clawhold for a while as one of Box's go-to's.

EDIT
Then again, this character seems like a perfect fit for the DOC / dueling clawholds could be a fun spot....

Hummm... we'll talk more if you get the yes'.

There were some tense issues and misspellings that a second read-through of the sample would've caught. Appreciate you doing up an original one. thumbsup.emoji

I agree with Evan that Saifo would be a good fit in the DOC division, but I have to consider the fact that DEFIANCE has a lot of asshole characters on the roster and we've hired a handful recently. You gave a thoughtful answer to Andy's character question, so I don't want to give you an outright "no," but I could really take or leave Terrance Myles. Nothing about him is jumping out at me and saying, "I gotta see what a mic spot looks like from this guy," and that's concerning when he's being presented as a mouthpiece for a silent wrecking ball.

I like Saifo, but I'm on the fence about Myles, so right now I'm on the fence about the app.

I slept on this/mulled it over some more/pick a phrase that suits your needs. I'll toss a yes vote in because Saifo is interesting enough for me to want to see how he'll do here. I just want you to be aware of the sea of shitheels you're about to wade into, and that may mean a little extra work to get Myles to stand out amongst the crowd. The good news is that we've got people here willing to help you out if you ask or need it. If you think you're up to the task, that's great.

Would like more of the roster to weigh in on the overall app, also.

The writing style had me interested pretty much from the word go. I'm also a fan of character's with a managerial mouthpiece. Coupled with everyone else's thoughts and the response, it's a yes from me!

Hey Bruv! Sorry I'm late to the party, i enjoyed this sample. I liked (like everyone else) that you wrote one for DEF specifically. I loved the description and you do a good jpob setting the mood/feel with it. I wanted to see more depth and dialogue myself to get more feel for the characters but it seems this is a fresh character for you anyway?

Moveset is realistic and legit.
Character seems like a good base but definately needs to build some depth.
Looking forward to seeing the mouthpiece more, you gotta out heel Curtis Penn who in my eyes is KILLING the mic spot right now on the heelishness. So good luck in general.

It looks like you are already in, Speaking from my point of view, I may have given this a NO, only because the writing sample came off as short to me, but the willingness to fit the mold that is DEF and the very strong promise this character has makes me say yes. Not that my vote matters now, but welcome. If you want some help on the heel stuff, hit me up sometime, always down to work with someone and see if I cant lend a hand.
