    Wrestler(s) Information

Ring Name: Woody & The Grin
    Height: Grin: 6'11" Woody: 6'
Weight: Grin: 350 lbs Woody: 220 lbs

    Hailing From: Greenville, USA

    Alignment: Face(less)

Gimmick: TL;DR version: Calvin & Hobbes meets Deadpool. Longer version: A huge faceless dude whose tag team partner and best friend is a fully articulated 6-foot-tall wooden dummy.

Wrestling Style: Grin's a big guy who relies on his gorilla-like strength and size to enforce his will, however he also uses his silliness and the ever-present "big = dumb" stereotype to conceal his ring awareness and strategy. His goal in every match is to confuse and frustrate his opponent and basically get them to do all the work. He also likes to enter tag-team matches or any match that allows him to have a partner, as this essentially allows him to use Woody as a legit weapon.

    Three Weaknesses:
    - Big guy speed. He's not winning any footraces any time soon
    - Very conservative with his energy, as he tends to run out of gas the longer a match goes on
    - As with most big guys, he's less effective if you mess with his legs

    Three Strengths:
    - Built like a shaved bear with the strength to match
    - Surprisingly keen ring awareness, it's difficult to sneak up on him
    - Smarter than he looks and capable of thinking a few moves ahead

    MOVESET

    Ten regular moveset moves:

    1) Big boot
    2) Gorilla press slam
    3) Headbutt
    4) Powerbomb
    5) Launch opponent into turnbuckle, mudhole stomp
    6) Big Show style chest slaps
    7) Lifting Full Nelson slam
    8) No-Selling basic running/jumping moves (e.g. dropkicks, clotheslines, etc)
    9) Kitchen Sink
    10) Uppercut throat thrust

    2-5 trademark moves:

    1) Rocky Mountain Migraine (Osaka Street Cutter)
    2) Chuckle Buster Parfait (Mandible Claw/Chokeslam combo)
    3) The Man-Breaker (Bronco Buster)
    4) Wooden Spear (launches Woody in such a way that Woody "spears" the opponent)
    5) Woodenziguri (launches Woody sideways; Woody impacts against the opponent and curls around in a way that causes Woody's legs to smack the opponent in the back of the head as well)

    1 Finishing Move
Singles Finisher: Grinside Out (Swinging reverse STO, aka "Sister Abigail")
Tag Team Finisher: Louisville Slam (With the opponent laying down on their back, The Grin tags in Woody, and then Alabama Slams Woody across the opponent)

1 "MDK" (murderdeathkill) Finishing Move (Rare Special Occasion Finisher) Singles MDK Finisher: Grintimidation (Vertebreaker, but with a delayed delivery, with Grin offering the opponent multiple opportunities to tap out before going for the impact)
Tag Team MDK Finisher: Louisville Grand Slam (Louisville Slam but Grin delivers it from the top rope. Can potentially break the ring.)

YES YES YES YES! Zilla is great, very fun writer, I’ve handled in two feds with the guy, he’s a blast. The characters are amazing and no one thinks like Zilla so get ready for good angles! Plus he does artwork for The Atomic Dropcast! Win win win- in this scenario we all win!

I like the concept. We've got a few strange characters so I think it'd fit in.

My only question is, are you planning to do mostly tag team matches with the dummy sitting on the apron? Or are you planning on working more as a singles wrestler?

And I'd prefer less Deadpool 4th wall breaking and more Deadpool "Wtf is happening is this really real?" in your writing. I don't want to see too much breaking kayfabe. Turn and wink to the camera, sure, but if you gotta hang a lampshade on it, try to avoid doing so too often. (http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.ph...mpshadeHanging)

    Otherwise, I'd vote yes.

Addressing your first concern, the "Woody" premise has multiple applications:

    - As a sidekick/straightman. Woody "moves" via jumpcuts, and operates sort of like a cross between the Weeping Angels from Doctor Who and semi-plausible deniability. His status as a living entity is purposely left ambiguous.
    - As a tag team partner. In this capacity he operates kind of like a "weapon" that Grin can tag in.
    - As a manager/outside distraction. Again, via the medium of "we didn't see him move but he moved so I dunno", Woody can inexplicably create the same sorts of distractions that a human would create.

So to more directly answer your question, he'd be a singles competitor that can participate in tag matches.

Addressing your second concern, I recently wrote an RP that shows about how far I like to go with the 4th wall breaking (link) My suggestion would be to read that and determine for yourself if you feel that went too far. The goal with most of Grin's wall-breaks is to poke fun at certain tropes, patterns, and quirks within both pro wrestling and e-fedding RP styles; in the example I provided, I made a gag referring to how so many promos seem to include conveniently-timed interruptions. It's got a bit of a lampshade on it because experience has taught me that "subtle" and "e-rasslin" are antonyms.

So no, Grin's never gonna be like "Hey Zilla why didn't you write me thinner" or "Hey Jack Harmen, I hear it cheeses off your handler when I wipe my butt with this map of Los Angeles, his place of residence". I also don't have Grin "break kayfabe" because as far as Grin's concerned wrestling is real and always has been.

That said, the goal of Woody & The Grin is whimsy and creative energy (the Calvin & Hobbes aspect is strongest), and how fun those things are when nobody can stop them from running around in the rain in their underpants, so TBH if there's a consensus towards rejecting that brand of creative energy then I will need to consider changing course, perhaps trying a different character concept entirely.

    Re: Woody & The Grin

As long as you're hanging a lampshade moreso on the hobby and not always just making the wrestling industry seem stupid (I mean, Edge & Christian literally said "it's time for our run in" during commentary once and I loved that moment), I'm good. Like, I don't think you went too far with your promo. In fact, when you go over your "strategy," I'd have liked it to go "Wait, why would I do that? why would anyone do that?"

I prefer subtle, but that's just a personal preference, and like you said, subtle doesn't get noticed in this hobby.

I guess the only thing I'd say is that we'd have to figure out how people play along with Woody moving off camera into new positions, which I'm sure you've already figured out in Death Row. I mean, I think DDK would play along cause he's a company man, but Angus would probably just go "Why are we having stage hands moving that thing?" Which in itself, would be breaking the 4th wall that you created, which is like, meta 4th wall break. Or maybe every time during his matches, Angus watches the dummy to try to prove it's not real or it's just a guy in a suit, and then gets distracted right when it moves and he looks back and goes "FUCK! I WAS THIS CLOSE TO PROVING THAT DUMMY IS A DUMMY!"

I mean, my character literally believes he's traveled in time (even though, ooc, we and he knows that it was all a stage show), and would happily sell you some snow (weather, not cocaine) if asked. So I'm no stranger to weirdness. Hell, Klein wears a box on his head when he wrestles and how the hell could you ever see where you're going wearing a box with two eye holes on your head?

I just think there's got to be an element of reality, wherein Grin is potentially crazy, even if he and everyone around him believes Woody is real. I like the character, the tone, so I'd rather try and see than just outright not try? Y'know?

Plus, OOC, out of kayfabe, we could easily explain the Woody dummy as pretending to be a dummy, but actually being a silent man inside a dummy costume, wood planks and all. Like a Disneyland mascot. A mime who doesn't move unless nobody is watching him, like your weeping angels. OR, we have stage hands move him into position and the DEF faithful go along with it and react in the moment as if it's real, and everyone knows the truth but everyone(Except Grin and the roster themselves?) is having fun with it and not drawing attention to it. Kind of a tongue in cheek thing.

It's like how I had Harmen get thrown through a wall once, and if anyone questioned how that could happen, I'd say well, they prepped it before hand so it would crumble easier because it was a stunt. I'm not going to say that in character, on the show, but ooc, if I was questioned, I had an explanation.

    Makes sense?

I see what you're pushing for, I acknowledge it, and I respect that you feel that way. I disagree with the necessity of it.

The Woody/Grin style of absurdity is sourced from works like Calvin & Hobbs and Family Guy, worlds where the rules are consistent and reliable but still ambiguous, and the audience is free to fill in the blanks themselves if they really feel they need to. More genre-relevant sources would be Santino Marella, Hornswoggle, Joey Ryan, and all the Japanese workers who job to ladders, little girls, and invisible men.

I mean yeah, there's fans and workers that hate that shit, but they do their shit-hating off-camera. It would arguably be more of a kayfabe/wall break to have non-cooperative workers trying in earnest to de-legitimize those gimmicks during showtime then it would be for the gimmicks themselves to exist.

If it helps you out, I write the segments under the premise that the actor playing Grin is shooting all the shots from his angle first, then creating the Woody shots from a different angle by posing Woody and taping things to him, and then cutting the resulting footage together in post.

    Re: Woody & The Grin

    Hello again,

It is with heartfelt regret that I have to withdraw my application.

(No, nobody "did" anything, this is entirely stuff on my end.)

I've taken some stock on the commitments I've made and compared them to my obligations and projects for the next 3 months, and came away with the conclusion that I simply do not have the bandwidth to keep up with the DEFIANCE schedule and creative needs.

My feeling is, rather than facing the risk of turning in a lackluster performance, it's best to step aside before it even becomes an issue.

I want to thank everyone that granted me a Yes vote, with an extra big thank you to:

    - Mikey, who recommended DEFIANCE
    - Brian, who got back to me really quickly and answered all my questions
    - Tom, whose feedback was equal parts intellectually stimulating and constructive
    - and Pete, who I am extra disappointed that I won't have another chance to work with again

And for the record, yes, once the summer is over with and I no longer have to figure out how to fit a work-from-home career around a stay-at-home dad schedule, I am very interested in submitting another request. It's precisely because I acknowledge and respect all the hard work that DEFIANCE puts into its product, that I must excuse myself until such time as I can meet those expectations.

Thank you again, and I'm truly sorry.

    -Z
