New FWrestling Site -- Need Your Feedback

Hey folks -- while I'm not trying to bite off more than I can chew at the moment (although Pete assures me that we're into day 3 of my 19 days of usefulness for the year), I have had some early thoughts about the potential of a new FWrestling.com site. I wouldn't start engaging the program until February at the earliest.

First -- some quick background, then I'll get to your feedback: The current forum style you see is part of a broader template. I have pages already created for use on a broader site, although they would need some tender, loving care to get some of the content/CSS in shape for use more broadly.

Second -- my intent would be that the new site would be driven by forum content. Not just posts made currently, but using the integrated content management system in vBulletin and some very customized forms/hacks to drive specific content into the web pages. I've identified a programmer that I feel has a shot at being able to do it -- I tried get a custom CMS set up before and the programmer just couldn't make it work.

Third -- the big question is -- What would you want to see? And what would you use?

    • Obviously, some of the FWrestling leagues have separate websites where they post their own content, while other don't. In the past, the site was used to try and drive both FW league news and in-character news from other leagues/communities. As you see at the top (and may remember), we also had a place to post event previews/links, rankings, and a page that showed the latest blogs/threads from other communities.
    • In the iteration before that one, we tried to have a staff that would guarantee some new column or content each day -- event and league reviews, blogs and columns, etc.

It's a new day -- what would you want to see for fun? What would be useful in driving the game forward for you, for your league, for the community, etc.?

A quick stream-of-consciousness list from me (feel free to react to it -- I would never include *all* these things):

Included in recent iteration Possible new/revived options?
League profiles and link list Twitter feed
"What is FW?" FAQs/articles Event reviews
    Event previews/links Blog content
League rankings (Top 10s, etc.) League features (history, feuds, etc.)
    Hosting More EFG/Podcast integration?
    (What would this look like?)
Links to community sites Better info on how to join leagues, etc.
    In-character news ?

    Yes.

Perhaps "What is FW" could use a rewrite. Last time it was pretty much all written by the old school CSWA guys, fresh perspectives could be valuable.

Re: New FWrestling Site -- Need Your Feedback

As a fedhead, the ability to shill DEF on the FW.com main site is a plus, I've been working on getting more eyes on my product, and FW has certainly helped in that aspect, I would have no compunction posting DEF content on the FW site.

As a member, I've seen all the copy/paste news sites all over the internet for the past twenty years and we all know that it's kind of "been there, done that" at this point. What I'd like to see is some SITE PRODUCED FRESH CONTENT. That is to say, TV reports and other "news" like you'd see at 411mania.com or on WWE.com that spotlights the member feds and the player characters involved would be great, if it's possible.

Playing in the same universe with the other feds could be fun, too. FW is very segregated, even on the inside, by everybody playing in their own little sandbox with very little cross-promotion. I'm not say we got to go full-fledged interfed with touring titles on championship calendars and whatnot, but an overall HOT TWENTYFIVE type of rankings thing could be nice, maybe even figure out a way to do TV ratings for all of us who are putting shows out on the ESEN TV channel.

These are just ideas, I could poop them out all day. Follow through is always where it gets lost in translation.

Re: New FWrestling Site -- Need Your Feedback

I like everything that's been mentioned before, and will add this:

-FWC-hosted Wiki page (like the old PTCpedia). That was such a great feature, and people definitely used it over there. People who join feds for the first time are always asking about that fed's history, about angles, wrestlers, etc. A Wiki page is an easy way for them to learn about the fed without having it explained in a thread.

    -More "Social" features

I fully realize that I am the reason the old profiles don't exist any more, but looking back it was actually a cool idea. Aside from the "ratings" I think profiles should tell more about a person and their history in the hobby, characters they are roleplaying, etc. We already have some of that, but it's not entirely user friendly. If we can make profiles more in line with what a modern day social media profile looks like, i.e. Facebook, but tailor it more to providing info on characters, feds, past work, etc, that would be great. Profiles should be fun, and people should want to use them more and view others as well. I can't remember the last time I did anything on my profile. Don't know how feasible this is, but figured I'd throw it out there.

Otherwise, I like the promotion of EFG Radio and Twitter feeds. I am going to hop on board with a character Twitter feed myself soon. Which character? NOT SURE YET.

I'm a huge mark for community rankings too, so let's bring those back.

Any thought about re-forming the UCC and making Brunk tour the board defending his Unified title? I think a UCC comprised of the main FWC fedheads: Merritt, Katz, Brunk, Justin and Voss, with maybe one or two old time non-fedheads like myself, Gregg, Stanton, Billy, or JN could keep things pretty fair, on a smaller scale than had been attempted before. And if it doesn't work, it disbands.

I think it's better to do an Ultratitle tourney once per year or once every other year, than to declare the CSWA champ the "Unified forum champ". Not a fan of the "touring forum champion" when leagues have their own belts. But if everyone else wanted to do it, I'd sign on to help out where I could.

Hell, me and Brunk already know what the first match would be. :-)

Oh, don't worry. The CSWA Champ wouldn't be the champ over all the feds in this forum for long.

    Cuz I'd beat him.

Fair enough, BFF - then how about an occasional forums-wide card? Doesn't have to be Ultratitle related, we could collect suggestions over what matches - fed borders be damned - people would like to see, and see if we can get them booked?

Lets not dismiss the idea of promoting a forum-wide champion. There's something to be said about being able to be the best of the best, and right now Billy you can say that.

That isn't to say that somebody might not want to challenge you for it sometime before ULTRATITLE 2016.

We can do joint SUPER PPVs once or twice a year, we can cross-promote, we can work together on angles. There's a lot that could be done, just a matter of people wanting to do it.

And, some people wouldn't like to do it. They obviously wouldn't have to.

Also: Billy's just mad that it's Brunk's title that's been proposed to go forum-wide instead of his own.

Ultratitle didn't make anybody the best of the best, IMO. I'd like to think I was active and putting in a ton of work with a lot of talented people prior to Ultratitle, and my best RPs certainly weren't written in that tourney until probably the finals. I went to other leagues and challenged people on their own turf, with their own people judging, just like Brunk and others have done. But if we're going to say that one "tour" makes somebody the best of the best, why should anybody put in effort to win their league's top belt? Just gear up for the big one.

You guys over at DEF put in a lot of work to promote your own title, your own tournament. Why would you want that to be secondary to a Unified title that to this point has only been competed for in CSWA? Or any type of Unified title.

To be honest, you'll get a much better idea of who "the best" is by doing forum-wide rankings and encouraging an atmosphere where leagues do cross-promotional cards, tournaments, or something like me and Brunk are doing by promoting our own match. One belt, one committee, will produce a narrowly defined champion and potential bitterness from anyone who feels like they weren't properly represented. Ultratitle may caused some to feel that way as well, but at least it's a one-shot deal. It's not like I defend the thing on a revolving basis. Let's not water down everybody's title for the sake of a big brother champion. What are we, a bunch of socialists?!

Besides, if you make it that easy for me to be #1 World Ranked, there will be nothing left for anybody else to win. :-)

Re: New FWrestling Site -- Need Your Feedback

Because my guys in DEF have an understanding of what an umbrella-wide champion is supposed to be, and they understand that the DEF World Title is the top thing there is in DEF, but if there were a title "above" it that was directly connected to (for example) CSWA, EPW, NFW, IGC, and jOlt, then that's exactly what it would be.

You forget, DEF spawned out of the ashes of an Interfed and most of my core roster has a decade or more experience in working in an interfed structure.

Jeez, you have no concept of "Champion of Champions," Bill.

I defy you to show up in DEF with that attitude. I know a few people who would love a crack.

Re: New FWrestling Site -- Need Your Feedback

I said the DEF title would be secondary to the Unified, you said it would be "above" the DEF title...pretty sure we just said the same thing, so let's not argue in circles. I get what a champion of champions is, the idea is pretty straightforward, and I'm personally not into it.

An FWC interfed title structure would be boring as fuck, and probably dominated by three leagues, and I say that as the champion of one of them. There's far more room for creativity (and fairness) if people work together on a card by card basis, set up dream matches with judges agreed upon by the two people and/or leagues involved, instead of some committee that's going to strong-arm the whole process. Brunk and I are going to be putting on an a card real soon, with Castor vs. Dan Ryan as the headline and judges we both trust. No leagues or committees involved. To me, that's preferable to some BS interfed that's tightly managed. It gives far more access to big matches to many more people.

No need to defy me Defiance guy, it was just a joke. If people want to work with me, they can send me a PM and we'll talk. No committee needed!

Re: New FWrestling Site -- Need Your Feedback

Okay, lets put a pin in that.

As it stands I've already spoken to one fedhead here about cross-promotion and doing joint PPV, and I'm not quite sure any of the other feds want to come out of their own "universe" to work with anyone else. That's really gonna be the problem with any of this. We may as well already be an interfed since a lot of the same people handle the same characters and work similar angles in multiple feds here, but then the feds are too busy being in their own universes to take advantage of that and work together to produce more than the bare minimum.

One thing I'd like to see in the "new, improved" FWC is less people making excuses about why something won't work, and more people making things work. That's just a general thought that I've been meaning to put out there for a while, though.

Chalk me down as a yes for any sort of inter-promotional work. The more the better. I've got fifteen years experience in that department.
