New FWrestling Site -- Need Your Feedback

Hey folks -- while I'm not trying to bite off more than I can chew at the moment (although Pete assures me that we're into day 3 of my 19 days of usefulness for the year), I have had some early thoughts about the potential of a new FWrestling.com site. I wouldn't start engaging the program until February at the earliest.

First -- some quick background, then I'll get to your feedback: The current forum style you see is part of a broader template. I have pages already created for use on a broader site, although they would need some tender, loving care to get some of the content/CSS in shape for use more broadly.

Second -- my intent would be that the new site would be driven by forum content. Not just posts made currently, but using the integrated content management system in vBulletin and some very customized forms/hacks to drive specific content into the web pages. I've identified a programmer that I feel has a shot at being able to do it -- I tried get a custom CMS set up before and the programmer just couldn't make it work.

Third -- the big question is -- What would you want to see? And what would you use?

    • Obviously, some of the FWrestling leagues have separate websites where they post their own content, while other don't. In the past, the site was used to try and drive both FW league news and in-character news from other leagues/communities. As you see at the top (and may remember), we also had a place to post event previews/links, rankings, and a page that showed the latest blogs/threads from other communities.
    • In the iteration before that one, we tried to have a staff that would guarantee some new column or content each day -- event and league reviews, blogs and columns, etc.

It's a new day -- what would you want to see for fun? What would be useful in driving the game forward for you, for your league, for the community, etc.?

A quick stream-of-consciousness list from me (feel free to react to it -- I would never include *all* these things):

Included in recent iteration Possible new/revived options?
League profiles and link list Twitter feed
"What is FW?" FAQs/articles Event reviews
    Event previews/links Blog content
League rankings (Top 10s, etc.) League features (history, feuds, etc.)
    Hosting More EFG/Podcast integration?
    (What would this look like?)
Links to community sites Better info on how to join leagues, etc.
    In-character news ?

    Yes.

Perhaps "What is FW" could use a rewrite. Last time it was pretty much all written by the old school CSWA guys, fresh perspectives could be valuable.

Re: New FWrestling Site -- Need Your Feedback

As a fedhead, the ability to shill DEF on the FW.com main site is a plus, I've been working on getting more eyes on my product, and FW has certainly helped in that aspect, I would have no compunction posting DEF content on the FW site.

As a member, I've seen all the copy/paste news sites all over the internet for the past twenty years and we all know that it's kind of "been there, done that" at this point. What I'd like to see is some SITE PRODUCED FRESH CONTENT. That is to say, TV reports and other "news" like you'd see at 411mania.com or on WWE.com that spotlights the member feds and the player characters involved would be great, if it's possible.

Playing in the same universe with the other feds could be fun, too. FW is very segregated, even on the inside, by everybody playing in their own little sandbox with very little cross-promotion. I'm not say we got to go full-fledged interfed with touring titles on championship calendars and whatnot, but an overall HOT TWENTYFIVE type of rankings thing could be nice, maybe even figure out a way to do TV ratings for all of us who are putting shows out on the ESEN TV channel.

These are just ideas, I could poop them out all day. Follow through is always where it gets lost in translation.

Re: New FWrestling Site -- Need Your Feedback

I like everything that's been mentioned before, and will add this:

-FWC-hosted Wiki page (like the old PTCpedia). That was such a great feature, and people definitely used it over there. People who join feds for the first time are always asking about that fed's history, about angles, wrestlers, etc. A Wiki page is an easy way for them to learn about the fed without having it explained in a thread.

    -More "Social" features

I fully realize that I am the reason the old profiles don't exist any more, but looking back it was actually a cool idea. Aside from the "ratings" I think profiles should tell more about a person and their history in the hobby, characters they are roleplaying, etc. We already have some of that, but it's not entirely user friendly. If we can make profiles more in line with what a modern day social media profile looks like, i.e. Facebook, but tailor it more to providing info on characters, feds, past work, etc, that would be great. Profiles should be fun, and people should want to use them more and view others as well. I can't remember the last time I did anything on my profile. Don't know how feasible this is, but figured I'd throw it out there.

Otherwise, I like the promotion of EFG Radio and Twitter feeds. I am going to hop on board with a character Twitter feed myself soon. Which character? NOT SURE YET.

I'm a huge mark for community rankings too, so let's bring those back.

Any thought about re-forming the UCC and making Brunk tour the board defending his Unified title? I think a UCC comprised of the main FWC fedheads: Merritt, Katz, Brunk, Justin and Voss, with maybe one or two old time non-fedheads like myself, Gregg, Stanton, Billy, or JN could keep things pretty fair, on a smaller scale than had been attempted before. And if it doesn't work, it disbands.

I think it's better to do an Ultratitle tourney once per year or once every other year, than to declare the CSWA champ the "Unified forum champ". Not a fan of the "touring forum champion" when leagues have their own belts. But if everyone else wanted to do it, I'd sign on to help out where I could.

Hell, me and Brunk already know what the first match would be. :-)
