The answer is no.

The definition of sound (according to Physics) is that sound waves must be created and there must be something to receive them, like a human ear. If there is nothing to receive these sound waves, then it is not technically sound. It is just waves of energy.

I think. :)

So what happens when you're using one of those ultra super duper mega listening devices the FBI has, and you're two miles away from the forest?

The bark snapping still makes a sound and the tree crushing against the ground still causes the sound waves.

Just because we're not there to witness it (hear it) doesn't mean no sound is produced. If a timed bomb goes off in the middle of the night in a car left for dead in the desert with no one around, you can be sure that sucker's making all kinds of noise.

Is the answer you provided because our ear acts as a receiver and actually converts the energy waves into what we know as sound?

Just because you don't hear it, doesn't mean that the sound never existed.

Do you hear someone talking to themselves half way around the world? No. Does that mean that he didn't make any sound? No.

This question had to have been asked by some person with a super huge ego who thought that if they didn't hear it, it never existed.

Besides, who really cares about some tree?

Oh well, thanks for asking.
